The Missing Word
There is no word for a parent who loses a child. The Missing Word introduces “ollipsent”. A new word created to describe parents living with that loss. As gun violence became the leading cause of death among children and teens in the U.S., more grieving parents are forced to relive their trauma every time they try to explain who they are.
The documentary captures the creation of the word “ollipsent,” developed alongside linguist Chelsea Frazier and parents directly impacted by gun violence.
Beyond the film, we also created a one-word dictionary book that tells the full story behind the term, combining its development process, supporting data, and the testimonies of these ollipsents.
